Be Not Grieved

“Although you have not received love’s guerdon,

One day this desert will become a garden

—so be not grieved.

Do not turn your heart away, nor expostulate

Against the Beloved, but bear your present state

—and be not grieved.

Let this disgusted mind and troubled heart be stilled,

One day desire for union will be fulfilled

—so be not grieved.

Behind the curtain a secret game is being played

That you know not, so don’t give up, nor be dismayed

—nor grieved.

Once you have set out for the Beloved’s abode

Do not let mere stones and thorns turn you from the road

—nor be much grieved.

Maya will do her best to thwart your labour,

But when you have a captain like Noah you will reach safe harbour

—so be not grieved.

Although the way is full of dangers and seems to have no end,

There is an end to every beginning with this Friend

—so be not grieved.

When this Friend is the same as God, don’t plague him with petitions,

But suffer gladly love’s rules, trials and conditions

—and be not grieved

A lover's call

Where are you, my beloved? Are you in that little
Paradise, watering the flowers who look upon you
As infants look upon the breast of their mothers?

Or are you in your chamber where the shrine of
Virtue has been placed in your honor, and upon
Which you offer my heart and soul as sacrifice?

Or amongst the books, seeking human knowledge,
While you are replete with heavenly wisdom?

Oh companion of my soul, where are you? Are you
Praying in the temple? Or calling Nature in the
Field, haven of your dreams?

Are you in the huts of the poor, consoling the
Broken-hearted with the sweetness of your soul, and
Filling their hands with your bounty?

You are God's spirit everywhere;
You are stronger than the ages.

Do you have memory of the day we met, when the halo of
You spirit surrounded us, and the Angels of Love
Floated about, singing the praise of the soul's deed?

Do you recollect our sitting in the shade of the
Branches, sheltering ourselves from Humanity, as the ribs
Protect the divine secret of the heart from injury?

Remember you the trails and forest we walked, with hands
Joined, and our heads leaning against each other, as if
We were hiding ourselves within ourselves?

Recall you the hour I bade you farewell,
And the Maritime kiss you placed on my lips?
That kiss taught me that joining of lips in Love
Reveals heavenly secrets which the tongue cannot utter!

That kiss was introduction to a great sigh,
Like the Almighty's breath that turned earth into man.

That sigh led my way into the spiritual world,
Announcing the glory of my soul; and there
It shall perpetuate until again we meet.

I remember when you kissed me and kissed me,
With tears coursing your cheeks, and you said,
"Earthly bodies must often separate for earthly purpose,
And must live apart impelled by worldly intent.

"But the spirit remains joined safely in the hands of
Love, until death arrives and takes joined souls to God.

"Go, my beloved; Love has chosen you her delegate;
Over her, for she is Beauty who offers to her follower
The cup of the sweetness of life.
As for my own empty arms, your love shall remain my
Comforting groom; you memory, my Eternal wedding."

Where are you now, my other self? Are you awake in
The silence of the night? Let the clean breeze convey
To you my heart's every beat and affection.

Are you fondling my face in your memory? That image
Is no longer my own, for Sorrow has dropped his
Shadow on my happy countenance of the past.

Sobs have withered my eyes which reflected your beauty
And dried my lips which you sweetened with kisses.

Where are you, my beloved? Do you hear my weeping
From beyond the ocean? Do you understand my need?
Do you know the greatness of my patience?

Is there any spirit in the air capable of conveying
To you the breath of this dying youth? Is there any
Secret communication between angels that will carry to
You my complaint?

Where are you, my beautiful star? The obscurity of life
Has cast me upon its bosom; sorrow has conquered me.

Sail your smile into the air; it will reach and enliven me!
Breathe your fragrance into the air; it will sustain me!

Where are you, me beloved?
Oh, how great is Love!
And how little am I!

Essence of this Joy

" But you who are so happy here, tell me:
do you aspire to a more profound
insight, or a greater ecstasy ?"
She smiled a little, as did the shades beside her
then answered with such gladness that her whole
being seemed to glow with love's first fire:
"Brother , God's generosity itself
calms our will, and makes us want no more
than what we have, and long for nothing else.
If we desired any greater bliss,
we would not be in harmony with Him
whose love assigns us to a lower place.
The essence of this joy is that we all
have given up our personal desires
so that our will is merged with Gods own will.
Therefore our rank in heaven, from height to height,
is just as dear to each particular soul
as to the Master who appointed it.
In His will is our peace: it is the sea
into which all currents and all streams
empty themselves, for all eternity," Dante

They Way You Can Get

I Know The Way You Can Get

I know the way you can get
When you have not had a drink of Love:

Your face hardens,
Your sweet muscles cramp.
Children become concerned
About a strange look that appears in your eyes
Which even begins to worry your own mirror
And nose.

Squirrels and birds sense your sadness
And call an important conference in a tall tree.
They decide which secret code to chant
To help your mind and soul.

Even angels fear that brand of madness
That arrays itself against the world
And throws sharp stones and spears into
The innocent
And into one's self.

O I know the way you can get
If you have not been drinking Love:

You might rip apart
Every sentence your friends and teachers say,
Looking for hidden clauses.

You might weigh every word on a scale
Like a dead fish.

You might pull out a ruler to measure
From every angle in your darkness
The beautiful dimensions of a heart you once
Trusted.

I know the way you can get
If you have not had a drink from Love's
Hands.

That is why all the Great Ones speak of
The vital need
To keep remembering God,
So you will come to know and see Him
As being so Playful
And Wanting,
Just Wanting to help.

That is why Hafiz says:
Bring your cup near me.
For all I care about
Is quenching your thirst for freedom!

All a Sane man can ever care about
Is giving Love!

Only in Doing

"Only in our doing can we grasp you.
Only with our hands can we illumine you.
The mind is but a visitor:
It thinks us out of our world.

Each mind fabricates itself.
We sense its limits, for we have made them.
And just when we would flee them, you come
and make of yourself an offering.

I don't want to think a place for you.
Speak to me from everywhere.
Your gospel can be comprehended
without looking for its source.

When I go toward you
it is with my whole life."

~ Rainer Maria Rilke

On Freedom

"From this hour, freedom!
From this hour I ordain myself loos’d of limits and imaginary lines,
Going where I list, my own master, total and absolute,  55
Listening to others, and considering well what they say,
Pausing, searching, receiving, contemplating,
Gently, but with undeniable will, divesting myself of the holds that would hold me."

Walt Whitman, From the Open Road

"Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage." Emerson

"No bird soars too high, if he soars on his own wings. "-- William Blake

Light Up

Light up the Fire I gaze into the heart, lowly it may be,
Thought the words be higher still.
For the heart is all the substance,
The speech an accident.
How many phrases will you speak,
Too many for me.
How much burning, burning will you feel,
Be friendly with the fire, enough for me.
Light up the fire of love inside,
And blaze the thoughts away.

Stop this Day

Stop this day and night with me
And you shall posses the origin of ALL poems
You shall posses the good of the earth and Sun...
There are millions of Suns left,
You shall no longer take things at second or third hand..
nor look through the eyes of the dead..
nor feed on the specters in books,
You shall not look through my eyes either,
nor take things from me,
You shall listen to all sides
and filter them for yourself.

I am Alone with You

"My God and my Lord: Eyes are at rest,
  the stars are setting,
hushed are the movements of birds in their nests,
  of monsters in the deep.
And you are the Just who knows no change,
the Equity that does not swerve,
the Everlasting that never passes away.
The doors of kings are locked and guarded by their henchmen,
but Your door is open to those who call upon You.
My Lord, each lover is now alone with his beloved
And I am alone with You."
 'Rabi'a al Adawiya'

Walking through the streets she was seen carrying a bucket of water in one hand and a burning candle in the other. When asked why, she said: "I want to set fire to heaven with this flame and put out the fire of hell with this water so that people will cease to worship God for fear of hell or for temptation of heaven. One must love God as God is Love." He, Glorious and Majestic said, "I was a hidden treasure, and I wanted to be known. So I created the Creation in order to be known." Hence to know His creation is to know Him; to love His creation is to love Him.
